A group of seventy members of the academic community of the University of Montenegro has sent the Parliament of Montenegro an initiative to amend the proposed Law on Higher Education in the part that regulates how the rector is elected.
The essence of the Initiative is a direct and democratic election of the rector, in which the rector would be elected by members of the academic community: professors, researchers, teaching assistants, non-academic staff and students.
The proposers believe this model would be an important step towards democratisation, stronger autonomy for the academic community and less influence for informal interest groups within the higher education system.
