Initiative to Amend the Law on Higher Education
A proposal for the direct and democratic election of the rector, giving the whole academic community a vote.
The proposal
The essence of the Initiative is a direct and democratic election of the rector, in which the rector would be elected by members of the academic community: professors, researchers, teaching assistants, non-academic staff and students.
Why it matters
The Initiative’s seventy proposers believe this model of election would be an important step towards:
- democratising the university,
- strengthening the autonomy of the academic community,
- reducing the influence of informal interest groups within the higher education system.
The proposers also point to the need for broader democratisation, especially in how the higher education system is governed.
